A samurai gave up the sword, built this garden, and lived here alone for 30 years — and it still shows his peace.

A refined hermitage built in 1641 by Ishikawa Jōzan, a former samurai turned scholar who lived here as a recluse until his death at 90. The karesansui white-sand garden is lined with azaleas representing islands in the sea, and a sōzu water device rhythmically clacks in the garden — originally designed to scare away wild boar. Inside, poems and portraits of 36 ancient Chinese poets line the walls.
