King Ludwig I loved the mild climate here so much he dubbed Aschaffenburg the 'Bavarian Nice' — and the Renaissance castle above the Main agrees.

A magnificent Renaissance palace, the summer residence of the Mainz archbishops, rising dramatically above the Main River. The interior houses cork models of Roman landmarks alongside period furniture and paintings. The beautiful palace garden behind it is a pleasure to wander.
